The Great British Duck Race breaks world record!
2 September 2008
The end of the summer holidays was marked in “eccentric British Style” when 3000 spectators cheered on their ducks in the rain along the banks of the river Thames, in the world’s biggest charity duck race! Hundreds of thousands of blue plastic ducks raced to the finish line down the 1 km stretch of the river hoping to be the fastest in this years’ Great British Duck Race.
A ‘sea’ of 175,000 blue plastic ducks took to the river at 1.30pm yesterday near Hampton Court Palace and raced to victory setting a new Guinness World Record and raising hundreds of thousands of pounds for over 650 UK charities!
Olympic Gold Medallist Rower, Andy Hodge along with patrons of The Down’s Syndrome Association (DSA), actress Emma Barton and rugby player Shane Geraghty launched this year’s World Record Breaking Charity event.
Mike Scott, Managing Director of the Great British Duck Race, said: “He was glad that the rain didn’t keep spectators away. To race such a large number of ducks is a fantastic achievement and an amazing sight to see! Some serious money was raised for a range of good causes and we managed to break the Guinness World Record again for the second year. We are now planning 2009 and hope to see you all there!”
Winning duck numbers will be published on the duck race website on Monday 1st of September. To find out more about prizes and how to claim them, please visit www.thegreatbritishduckrace.co.uk
