Description

Orleans House Gallery offers innovation arts and heritage education provision in an inspiring riverside setting. The heritage education programme takes themes relating to the local heritage landscape as the starting point for workshops that allows pupils to explore the theme in a creative, meaningful, enjoyable way, while at the same time gaining skills, knowledge and experience that contribute directly to National Curriculum programmes of study for their age group. This is what we mean by a cross-curricula programme; one which looks beyond the curriculum at the same time as responding to it to arrive at a richer exploration of issues and ideas relating to our local heritage.

- Key Stage 1 - Description
- 1) Geography, Citizenship; Workshops use discussion, art and a riverside walk to explore the Arcadian Thames landscape through its history, today and in the future,. There is an opportunity to interview someone who looks after the local landscape. 2) English; Workshops explore the inspiration of the river landscape through writing, reading, speaking and past writing inspired by the Richmond river landscape. The writers and writing tasks will be age-appropriate and may involve persuasive writing, poetry and song lyrics. The activities can be tailored to focus upon poetry or persuasive writing as desired and include a river walk.3) History, Geography; This visit introduces three riverside houses, why they were built, and how their uses have changed over time. Pupils visit Marble Hill House, look across at Ham House and visit Orleans House Gallery. They use map work and historic images and group work to create art on the theme of 'what if?' imagining the river without the historic houses. 4) Geography, History; Workshops explore the co-existence of man and wildlife along our stretch of the Thames. Using maps and aerial photographs to identify green areas, discuss previous uses and the importance of preserving green spaces. Exploring a habitat in the grounds of Orleans House or Marble Hill, using a checklist to record wildlife and human activity. This information creates a display about 'residents' of these historic properties.
