Location details
School on the River, our programme for schools, takes place at Teddington Lock, where the Richmond Venturer, your floating classroom, will be moored for the day.
Description of site
Teddington Lock is a unique stretch of the Thames, where the non-tidal freshwater river meets tidal estuarine Thames. School on the River offers opportunities to compare these contrasting parts of the river within a small area, there are also three locks (the smallest and largest locks on the river), an island, a weir, two foot bridges, foreshore, parkland, plus a variety of plants, wildlife, bank treatments and land uses to study.
Thames resources
School visits are based around School on the River our Key Stage 2 environmental education resource, specially developed and written by the River Thames Boat Project with a local teacher. It offers a comprehensive cross curricular environmental study programme of the Thames. Activities take place on board the Richmond Venturer, at the Lock and on the river bank.

School on the River is a cross curricular environmental studies resource about the Thames for school groups. All programmes include practical work afloat led by experienced Boat Project staff, supported by trained volunteers.
Notes
We employ a qualified skipper and volunteer crew to run the Richmond Venturer. The boat is well equipped with an oven, hob, microwave, crockery and cutlery, two fridges, plus bunks, toilets and showers all of which are accessible to people with disabilities. On board there are books and information about the Thames for visitors to use. The Venturer is hired on a self catering basis, it has become a custom that meals are provided for the skipper and volunteers by the visiting group. The galley is well equipped so please do not bring paper plates, plastic cups or plastic cutlery - they are not environmentally friendly and are easily blown into the river when taken on deck. A kit list for overnight trips is available to down load from our website: www.thameboatproject.org
