What better way to burn off the calories than boating? Whether you fancy rowing, canoeing or steering your way along the Thames on a motor boat, there are lots of options. You could start by hiring a boat from Hobbs of Henley or Cotswold Boat Hire. Rowing boats cost from £15 per hour (£50 a day).

Walk the Thames Path

Although 184 miles long, you can easily walk the Thames Path in stretches to suit your family's energy levels. If you love beautiful views and wildlife, you won't be disappointed. Make a weekend of it by staying in a hotel overnight, such as the family-friendly Runnymede, or simply take a stroll. There are 45 locks along the way; many with cafes serving cream teas.

If you'd prefer an organised walk, the Wycombe District Council Rangers run many walks throughout the summer. The walks are guided and usually themed, and you can explore the plant and animal life on and around the River Thames. Visit their events calendar.

Catch a fish for free! 

There are several place along the River Thames where you can fish for free! If you've never tried this sport before, we can show you how to get started with fishing tips from experts.

Try a family challenge?

Are your little ones mad about wildlife? The National Trust runs several Wild Child events throughout the summer, including Foraging for Food events. Choose from family challenges such as pond-dipping and bug-hunting to animal-tracking and wilderness-exploring. Foraging for Food at Basildon Park, 27 -31 May.

Go by train...be kind to the environment

Many places along the Thames are accessible by train. So take the strain out of travelling and check out First Great Western. They regularly run special offers, which can help your budget go further. How about leaving the car at the camp site and heading to a picnic spot by train?
