Marlow's original prosperity was brought about by the Knights Templar who had a house at nearby Bisham and built the first bridge over the Thames here.
Marlow Lock itself was built as a timber (fir wood) pound lock in 1773 and reconstructed in stone in 1825. In that same year, a new lock was built alongside the old one which was filled in. A private house now sits on the site of the original lock. The new lock was rebuilt by the Thames Conservancy in 1927 and it's this lock we see here today.
Lock keeper
Duncan Holmes-Birtles is the Lock keeper here at Marlow. From a background in flower and plant wholesaling, Duncan started his lock-keeping career as a Summer Assistant in May 2002. He enjoys his work at Marlow Lock for many reasons. 'This is a very pleasant way of life, within a nice island community,' he continues. 'Here is a unique lock. It's a busy, deep lock which means the boats need constant supervision as they pass through.' On some days, as many as 30 fours and eights row through the lock on training days.
An interesting fact
The Compleat Angler hotel in Marlow marks the finishing point for the famous Marlow Regatta, held annually since 1866. It is said to be the most popular one-day regatta in the country.
