Reading on the River Thames

Reading might not be the first idea that pops into your head when thinking of somewhere to spend a day out, but it really does have a lot to offer. From boat trips, to museums and shopping centres to wildlife parks.

Museums

The Museum of Reading tells the story of Reading through the ages, from its Saxon beginnings to today's high-tech town. Discover more about Reading’s two rivers - the Thames and Kennet - at The Riverside Museum at Blake's Lock. Or head to one of England’s most fascinating collections at the Museum of English Rural Life and learn more about life and work in the countryside over the last 200 years.

Historic Houses

A short journey from Reading centre, enjoy a visit to the beautiful Palladian mansion of Basildon Park, built in 1776-83. The interior is notable for its original delicate plasterwork and elegant staircase, as well as the unusual Octagon Room. Explore the estate of Mapledurham built in the late-16th century. The house contains a collection of paintings and family portraits, oak staircases, original plaster ceilings and a private chapel. Half way between Reading and Basingstoke is the family home of the Duke of Wellington. Take a tour of Stratfield Saye House, which contains many personal possessions and mementoes of this famous soldier/statesman.

Shopping

If you are looking for high fashion, spectacular gifts and an unrivalled choice of eateries then The Oracle shopping centre is the place for you. If you prefer a line up of high street names and famous bargain outlets then head to the Broad Street Mall.

Wildlife Parks

For family fun head to Beale Park. There is a lot to see and do in this wildlife and activity park set in beautiful parkland beside the River Thames. With collections of owls, parrots, monkeys and cattle as well as a narrow gauge railway, several play areas, paddling pools and pets corner, no-one will be bored. Bucklebury Farm Park, a few miles west of Reading, offers a great day out. Take a free tractor and trailer ride through the deer park, feed and stroke the farm animals and have a blast in the adventure playground.

Boat Trips

Thames Rivercruise offers a fantastic range of scheduled passenger boat trips between Easter and September, departing from Caversham and Beale Park. Whether you are looking to explore up or down stream, there is plenty to take in on these superb cruises.
