Nestled high above the River Thames with panoramic views over the Berkshire countryside, these National Trust gardens capture the grandeur of a bygone age.
Over the course of 300 years, each family that fell in love with this place added their own extravagant touch, creating a series of distinct gardens. From carpets of spring bulbs and vibrant floral displays on the elaborate Parterre, to the intimate Rose Garden and rich autumn colour in the oriental Water Garden, each area is designed purely for pleasure. The formal gardens give way to open glades, majestic beech woodland and picturesque Thames riverbank with miles of walks to discover.
Meanwhile, the storybook-themed play area encourages young imaginations to run wild as children play amongst wooden carvings of favourite storybook characters whilst the 500 metres of winding paths in the Cliveden Maze make it a challenge for all ages to find the centre.
A glittering hub of society, Cliveden was home to dukes, earls, viscounts and for a while a prince, hosting exclusive parties and political gatherings, before becoming infamously associated with the Profumo Affair in the 1960s. Cliveden House is now a luxury hotel but visitors can take a peek inside by joining a short guided tour on Thursday or Sunday afternoons from April to October (timed ticket required).
Cliveden is open mid-February – end December, 10am – 5.30pm (or dusk if earlier)
