Moulsford on Thames

Originally in Berkshire, this small Thames-side village was transferred to Oxfordshire in 1974 and is now part of South Oxfordshire.

It is on the A329, between Streatley and Wallingford. Bordering the River Thames and the foothills of the Berkshire Downs it contains the Moulsford Downs, a site of special scientific interest. Nearby is the Moulsford Railway Bridge, designed by Brunel.

The Church of Saint John the Baptist includes some of the original medieval church including a 13th century Gothic lancet window. The new church was rebuilt in 1846 on the lines of a Gothic Revival building designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott.

Just south of the village, at the point of an old ferry crossing is the former waterfront inn, now The Beetle and Wedge Boathouse Restaurant which also offers three comfy rooms. Set on the stretch of the river immortalised in "The Wind in the Willows”,  where Jerome K Jerome chronicled the escapades of his friends’ visits in “Three Men in a Boat”, enjoy dining in a tranquil and peaceful of the riverside setting in the beautiful old beamed Boathouse.

Today Moulsford is more famous for appearing in the Midsomer Murders TV series in the episode ‘Dead in the Water’.
