About

A fantastic walk from Reading to Lower Shiplake, as part of the Reading Walks Festival, along the iconic Thames Path National Trail hosted by the Thames Path National Trail Team.

Meeting point is Thames Promenade Car Park. From here we start our walk, making our way downstream, we will pass Horseshoe Bridge which crosses the mouth of the Kennet and Avon Canal as it joins the river Thames. As we emerge from Reading, we walk towards Sonning and on to Shiplake on a section of the Thames Path that takes us through some lush woodlands and beautiful rural countryside. When we reach Lower Shiplake, you will have the option of joining us for a pub lunch at the Baskerville in Lower Shiplake or embarking on your train ride back to Reading.

About the route:

Medium difficulty / 10.4 km / 2.5 - 3 hours (allow 4 if joining for lunch)
Start - Thameside Promenade Car Park
End - The Baskerville, 7 Station Road, Henley on Thames, RG9 3NY
Wear walking boots and comfy socks. In case of bad weather bring waterproofs.
Bring a drink and snack.
Toilets available at the mid point (Sonning) and start and end of walk.
Not family friendly
Not wheelchair accessible

About the guide

The walk is led by Clare Jarratt, the Engagement Officer with the Thames Path National Trails Team and a keen walker, dog lover and enthusiastic about getting out and about!

Getting there

To reach the start point by bus - these buses all have routes which pass close to the Thameside Promenade car park: 22, 24, 800, RA1, X40. Please see the Reading Buses website for route information www.reading-buses.co.uk

Parking - there is a £3 parking charge to pay, which will give you 5 hours parking.
