Day 16 Cookham to Windsor/Eton
After yesterdays heat it was almost a relief to see cloudy skies at the start of today's walk, however, it was still a warm one! Geoff Dare from MUFC Walks led us today after we were gifted a quick tour of the Stanley Spencer Gallery by the lovely staff. The walk took us though picturesque rurual stretches and the more urban landscapes around Maidenhead, where we paused for refreshments and ice cream. Our days was finished in style on the stunning Eton Bridge.
Day 17 Windsor/Eton to Staines
Today was led by Becca from Windsor River Watch, and it was hot, hot, hot! We had 17 hardly souls join us for the walk, which luckily benefitted from plenty of lovely shady sections. Near the end of the walk some of the group jumped aboard the Little Green Boat company and had a quick trip across the river to Lammas Park where we were met my tomorrow's walk leaders Shirley Lunn and Daniel Henessey who had arranged a welcome party that included drinks, food and dancing. We also got to meet Howie the Heron - a statue made from the 100th shopping trolley to be fished out of the Thames by Staines Waterway Pickers!
Day 18 Staines to Walton
Staines Waterway Pickers led us today, on another very warm day. So hot in fact, that the decision was made to cut the walk short and finish the leg in a canoe! We walked as far as Chertsey Meadows, stopping for a picnic in the shade, and then while most of the group made their way home to cool off, five of the crew continued by boat and car to carry the baton to the finish point in the Felix Recreation Ground, Walton-on-Thames. A big thank you again to Shirley Lunn and Daniel Henessey for their generous welcome, open hospitality and snack lunch that was provided. We also had the honour of meeting Howie the Heron - a metal sculpture created from the 100th shopping trolley that Daniel fished out of the river Thames!
