Ballad Of A Bridge, Bankside

Meet me on Millennium Bridge

where centuries connect, steel girders vibrate

and lovers stand

I’ve been waiting years to meet you

where cities grow, cathedrals crown the sky

and lovers gaze

I’ve been standing on the banks

where garden birds sing, of forever and now

and lovers dream

I’ve been walking urban mud

where industry burns, scum and debris gather

and lovers turn

I’ve been watching from my window

where strong tides leave, the busyness of boats

and lovers change

I’ve been counting all the hours

where the waiting years go, under bridges a-plenty

till lovers meet

and lovers stay

BANKSIDE AND SOUTH BANK, CENTRAL LONDON

The Thames has over 200 bridges in total, including 35 major bridges in central London. The Millennium Bridge, officially known as the London Millennium Footbridge, is a steel suspension bridge for pedestrians crossing the River Thames in London from Bankside on the south bank with the City of London on the north bank.

BANKSIDE

Alongside its neighbour South Bank, Bankside is also a creative and cultural setting,  home to the world's most visited art gallery, Tate Modern, one of London's oldest food markets, Borough Market, and instantly recognisable Shakespeare's Globe and Southwark Cathedral. It follows the river, a little west of Blackfriars Bridge to just a short distance before London Bridge at St Mary Overie Dock.

SOUTH BANK

The South Bank is a narrow strip on the south bank of the River Thames, opposite the City of Westminster, between County Hall and Albert Embankment in the West and the Oxo Tower and Bankside in the east. It’s famed as an entertainment district with arts and cultural venues, restaurants and iconic attractions.

The area became known as the South Bank in 1951 during the Festival of Britain. 75 years later, the South Bank still sets the stage for culture, creativity and unforgettable moments.
