Horse Racing Along The Thames

Horse racing offers visitors a great day out!

Without doubt the Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead is at the forefront of Horse Racing, and it is home to two racecourses. It is fitting that having Windsor Castle as her main home, Queen Elizabeth II had a lifelong passion for horses, and horse racing was a sport very close to her heart.  The late Queen owned and bred many thoroughbred horses and shared her interest in horses with many members of her family.

  •  Royal Windsor Racecourse - is set in 165 acres of beautiful countryside on the banks of the River Thames. French Brothers offers a regular service to and from Windsor Racecourse from Windsor Promenade on race days.

  • Ascot Racecourse - It was Queen Anne in 1711 that first saw the potential for a racecourse at Ascot.  Whilst out riding one day she came across an area of open heath and considered it “ideal for horses to gallop at full stretch”.

VisitWindsor has more information and a 'Beginner's Guide to Racing' to help you get the most out of the raceday experience.

Other Courses Close to the Thames

Kempton Park Racecourse is one mile from the river. The closest racecourse to central London, situated south-west of London, Kempton Park is famously home of the Christmas jumping showpiece, the King George VI Chase.

Sandown Park Racecourse is two miles from the river. Sandown Park is a unique racing experience; a stunning location and the course's famous hill finishes combine to create an environment full of excitement and nail biting close finishes.
