Barley to Beer in Wallingford
Where the Thames Path National Trail leaves the river at Wallingford and follows Thames Street, take a few moments to admire the town’s historic buildings, including this 18th century malthouse, now home to Wallingford Rowing Club.
For many years the town was a busy centre for malting barley, which grew in the fields nearby. At one time there were 17 malthouses and more than 40 ‘pubs’ where locally- brewed ale was sold.
From Wallingford Bridge why not take a short pub crawl, or five-minute walk, up the High Street to visit Wallingford Museum in Flint House, and this year’s new exhibition all about brewing.
Barley to Beer traces the history of malting and brewing industry within Wallingford, and how it shaped unusual buildings along the Thames Path, such as the large 17th century malthouse built of chalk clunch in Lower Wharf, just by the Thames Path.
