The river Thames can be a lot more dangerous than it seems. Its deep, murky, cold, and often fast flowing. Even though it may look tempting for a dip, especially in the summer weather, you can be pulled under in seconds.
The Port of London Authority have launched a new campaign called ‘See the river, see the risk’ to raise awareness of the dangers of the water, follow this link for more information: See the river, See the risk | Port of London Authority It is aimed at young people aged 10-16 and highlights hidden risks such as strong currents, cold water shock, and murky waters, which can be life-threatening.
The campaign emphasises the importance of recognising these risks before they become dangerous, especially during warmer months when more young people spend time near the river. A stock of downloadable resources for the campaign are also available via the link to help spread awareness and promote water safety.
If you see anyone in trouble in the river, do not enter the water, instead call 999 and ask for the coastguard. If there is a life-ring or something you can throw to them to hold onto do so. You can also tell the person in the water to lie back and float, opening their arms and likes into a star shape can help them stay afloat while help arrives.
