The Thames Path National Trail passes through the pretty village of Cookham, and the front door of the Stanley Spencer Gallery, which hosts a superb collection of the artist’s work.

The River Thames is a central feature of many of Spencer’s paintings, including ‘Christ Preaching at Cookham Regatta’.

This enormous and ambitious unfinished work forms the centrepiece of this summer’s exhibition ‘That Marvellous Atmosphere’ which opens on Thursday 3 April.

Spend a few hours in Cookham to walk in Spencer’s footsteps and discover the marvellous atmosphere alongside the River Thames, through the village’s lanes and across historic commons.
